On December 31, 2025, the world of football and education lost a beloved figure: Nick Eddy, the former Notre Dame standout and Detroit Lions running back, passed away at the age of 81 from cardiac arrest.
Born in Dunsmuir, California, and raised in Tracy, Eddy’s journey to football greatness began with his impressive play at the University of Notre Dame. From 1963 to 1966, he embodied the grit, speed, and determination that Notre Dame is known for. A key contributor to the 1964 and 1966 national championship teams, Eddy was a unanimous All-American in 1966 and finished third in Heisman Trophy voting — the highest finish for a Notre Dame running back in decades.
At Notre Dame, Eddy’s athleticism was undeniable. Over his collegiate career, he rushed for over 1,600 yards and posted a remarkable 7.1 yards per carry in his senior season, while also contributing on special teams. His memorable plays and leadership helped define an era of Irish football that fans still cherish.
Following his collegiate success, Eddy was selected by the Detroit Lions in the second round of the 1966 NFL Draft. He went on to play six seasons in the NFL, appearing in numerous games for the Lions from 1967 to 1972. Despite battling knee injuries that limited his performance, Eddy contributed as both a runner and receiver, finishing his professional career with several touchdowns and nearly 800 scrimmage yards.
Yet, Nick Eddy’s life was about much more than football. After retiring from the NFL, he pursued his passion for helping others. He earned a master’s degree and devoted many years to education as a special education teacher in Modesto, California. Eddy dedicated himself to supporting and inspiring young people, applying the same work ethic and heart that carried him on the gridiron.
A devoted family man, Eddy was cherished by his wife Jean, their four children, and nine grandchildren. Outside the classroom and the field, he served as a leader in his community, including roles in the Knights of Columbus and active participation in Notre Dame alumni events.
Nick Eddy’s legacy is one of athletic excellence, selfless service, and lifelong impact. Though he has passed, his influence will be remembered in stadiums, schools, and hearts across generations.
