The Detroit Lions have officially wrapped up their selections in the 2026 NFL Draft, and one of the biggest takeaways was general manager Brad Holmes addressing the edge rusher position early.

Detroit selected Derrick Moore out of University of Michigan in the second round, giving star pass rusher Aidan Hutchinson another young defensive weapon on the edge. The two also share Michigan roots, which could help build chemistry on the Lions’ defensive front.

However, despite adding Moore, Detroit may still look to strengthen its pass-rushing depth heading into the 2026 season.

A.J. Epenesa Emerges as Potential Lions Free-Agent Target

According to Mike Payton of A to Z Sports, the Lions should consider signing veteran defensive end A. J. Epenesa to add experience and depth to the defensive line.

Epenesa previously played for the Buffalo Bills but remains available in free agency after a deal with the Cleveland Browns fell through when he failed a team physical.

If the Lions’ medical staff determines he is healthy enough to contribute, Epenesa could become a valuable addition to Detroit’s defensive rotation.

Payton explained that adding another pass rusher could further strengthen the unit.

The Lions already have Moore as a developing starter and D. J. Wonnum as part of their edge rotation, but another experienced defender could provide additional depth and competition.

Veteran Edge Could Strengthen Detroit’s Defensive Depth

Epenesa has quietly put together a productive NFL career. During his six seasons with Buffalo, he recorded 24 sacks and four interceptions, showing his ability to impact games as a pass rusher and disrupt opposing offenses.

According to contract data from Spotrac, Epenesa has earned approximately $20.6 million throughout his NFL career.

Because of the recent failed physical with Cleveland, the Lions might be able to sign the veteran defender to an affordable short-term deal if their medical staff clears him.

 Other Teams, Including the Chicago Bears, Could Show Interest

Detroit may not be the only team evaluating Epenesa.

Mike Pendleton of Bears Wire has also suggested the Chicago Bears could consider signing the veteran edge rusher.

Pendleton noted that Epenesa is one of the younger pass rushers still available on the market and could benefit from a one-year prove-it deal if a team is comfortable with his health status.

Could Epenesa Complete the Lions’ Defensive Front?

Signing Epenesa would not necessarily transform the Lions’ defensive line overnight, but it could provide valuable depth behind Hutchinson and Moore.

For a team looking to remain competitive and maintain a strong pass rush throughout the season, adding a proven veteran could be a smart, low-risk move.

If Detroit ultimately decides to bring Epenesa in for a physical and he passes, the Lions could further strengthen a defensive unit already anchored by Hutchinson and boosted by the addition of Moore.
