Los Angeles Rams may have found Stafford’s replacement… but Kelly Stafford just changed the narrative
The Los Angeles Rams may be preparing for the future, but franchise quarterback Matthew Stafford is still firmly in control after an MVP-winning season.
Following the 2026 NFL Draft, the Rams selected former Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Ty Simpson with the No. 13 overall pick. The move immediately sparked conversations about a potential successor to Stafford, who is entering his 18th NFL season.
However, any speculation about tension was quickly eased thanks to a welcoming gesture from Stafford’s wife, Kelly Stafford.
Kelly Stafford Welcomes Ty Simpson to Rams
During his introductory press conference, Simpson revealed that Kelly Stafford personally reached out to him on social media.
“Kelly actually texted me on Instagram, welcomed me, and told me to reach out if we need anything,” Simpson said.
The rookie quarterback added that he is eager to learn directly from Matthew Stafford and “pick his brain” as he transitions to the NFL.
Rams Make It Clear: Stafford Still QB1
Despite drafting a quarterback in the first round, head coach Sean McVay made it clear that there is no quarterback controversy in Los Angeles.
“This is Matthew’s team,” McVay emphasized, shutting down any notion that Simpson would compete for the starting role immediately.
Instead, Simpson is expected to develop as a backup while learning behind one of the league’s most experienced passers.
Ty Simpson’s College Production
Simpson enters the NFL after a strong 2025 season at Alabama:
Passing Yards: 3,567
Touchdowns: 28
Role: Full-time starter
His performance helped solidify his status as a first-round pick and a long-term investment for the Rams.
Looking Ahead for the Rams
With Matthew Stafford coming off an MVP campaign and still playing at a high level, the Rams appear to be balancing win-now ambitions with future planning.
Ty Simpson’s arrival provides insurance at quarterback while also giving the franchise a potential heir apparent—without disrupting the current leadership of the team.
For now, the message from inside the organization is clear: Stafford remains the leader, and Simpson is here to learn and grow.
