Aaron Glenn’s Jets Sign Former Detroit Lions Assistant Coach as Defensive Coordinator

Former Detroit Lions defensive assistant Brian Duker has been named the new defensive coordinator of the New York Jets, according to multiple national reports. The move comes as Jets head coach Aaron Glenn continues a major overhaul of his coaching staff following a disappointing first season in New York.

Glenn, who previously served as the Lions’ defensive coordinator, is once again turning to a trusted colleague from his Detroit days. Duker and Glenn worked together for three seasons with the Lions, building a close professional relationship that now carries over to New York.

Duker most recently spent the last two seasons with the Miami Dolphins as their pass game coordinator and defensive backs coach. Before that, he worked with the San Francisco 49ers, Cleveland Browns, and Baltimore Ravens. He joined Dan Campbell’s first Lions staff in 2021 as a defensive assistant, became safeties coach in 2022, and later took on a larger role overseeing the entire secondary.

The Jets also showed interest in another former Lions assistant. Detroit defensive assistant Jim O’Neil interviewed for the defensive coordinator position but ultimately returned to the Lions after signing a new contract.

Meanwhile, Glenn still has several vacancies to fill on his coaching staff. The Jets recently fired former Lions assistant Tanner Engstrand, leaving an opening at offensive coordinator. Additional openings remain at quarterback coach, passing game coordinator, linebackers coach, defensive line coach, and other defensive staff roles.

In Detroit, the Lions have already moved quickly to reshape their staff. They hired Drew Petzing as offensive coordinator and brought in former New York Giants interim head coach and offensive coordinator Mike Kafka for a senior offensive role. The Lions still have an opening at tight ends coach after Tyler Roehl left for Iowa State.

As Glenn continues rebuilding the Jets’ coaching staff, the hiring of Duker signals a growing reliance on familiar faces from his Detroit tenure — a trend that could continue throughout the offseason.
