The Detroit Lions will begin a leadership transition before the 2026 NFL season after longtime president and CEO Rod Wood announced his decision to retire.
The Lions confirmed Wednesday that Wood will step down from his role before the start of next season. In a team press release, the organization stated that a search for his successor will begin immediately.
“I want to thank the Ford family and Lions fans everywhere for trusting me to lead the Detroit Lions for the last 11 seasons,” Wood said. “It has been an absolute thrill to lead this organization, and I am proud of what we have accomplished. I am especially proud of leaving this team in the capable hands of Sheila Hamp, Brad Holmes, and Dan Campbell.”
Sheila Hamp Praises Rod Wood’s Leadership
Lions principal owner and chair Sheila Hamp expressed gratitude for Wood’s contributions during his tenure.
“The entire Ford family would like to thank Rod for his dedication and commitment to the Detroit Lions and the city of Detroit,” Hamp said. “Rod has been a trusted advisor and passionate leader for our organization and the entire NFL. He has prepared the Lions for a promising future. While he will be missed, we are excited to work with Russell Reynolds Associates to identify the next dynamic leader of our business.”
Rod Wood’s Career with the Lions
Wood joined the Lions in 2015 following a 30-year career in finance and wealth management, including a 10-year stretch as head of Ford Estates, the Ford family office.
A native of Goodrich, Michigan, Wood has played a key role in working with business and government leaders to elevate Detroit as a major sports and entertainment destination.
According to the team, Wood and his wife Susan are looking forward to spending more time with their family following his retirement.
