Chicago Bears Could Relocate Home Games to Another State, Impacting Detroit Lions Rivalry

The could one day face their longtime rivals, the , in a different state than Illinois.

Detroit wrapped up last season with a road victory at , securing another winning campaign under head coach . But future matchups between the NFC North opponents may not take place in Chicago if the Bears move forward with plans across state lines.

Momentum is building in Indiana after lawmakers approved legislation creating a Northwest Indiana Stadium Authority. The measure lays the groundwork for financing, constructing, and leasing a potential new venue in Hammond.

In a public statement, the Bears described the bill — Senate Bill 27 — as a significant advancement in their stadium efforts. The organization said it intends to complete additional site evaluations as part of its vision to develop a state-of-the-art facility near the Wolf Lake area in Hammond, Indiana.

Team officials also thanked several Indiana leaders for their role in advancing the proposal. Among those acknowledged were Governor Mike Braun, House Speaker Todd Huston, Senator Ryan Mishler, and members of the Indiana General Assembly. According to the Bears, collaboration with state officials has created a pathway toward delivering what they envision as a premier destination venue serving fans across the Chicagoland region and beyond.

Speaker Huston noted that discussions with the franchise have been productive and emphasized that Indiana is prepared to support the project. Governor Braun echoed that sentiment, describing the state as business-friendly and highlighting the Wolf Lake site as a promising location. He added that the proposed amendment to SB 27 provides the necessary framework to finalize an agreement, contingent on the completion of site-specific due diligence.

Should the relocation materialize, it would not be without precedent in the NFL. The and , for example, both play their home games at in East Rutherford, New Jersey, despite representing New York.

For the Lions, a Bears move to Indiana would simply mean adjusting travel plans — but it would also mark a notable shift in one of the league’s most historic rivalries.
