Detroit Lions’ Potential $80 Million Move May Signal the End of David Montgomery’s Run in Detroit
The Detroit Lions could soon make a massive financial commitment that reshapes their backfield — and it may signal the end of David Montgomery’s tenure in Detroit.
All signs point to the organization preparing for a significant extension for Jahmyr Gibbs. Although Gibbs is under team control through 2027 thanks to his fifth-year option, general manager Brad Holmes could choose to lock him up well before he nears free agency. The expected price tag, however, would be enormous.
According to Eric Woodyard of ESPN, Detroit has already committed nearly $1 billion in total contract value to nine players since the spring of 2024. That spending flexibility allows the franchise to be patient with Gibbs, but when negotiations begin, the running back is expected to pursue a record-setting payday — potentially surpassing the $20.6 million annual average earned by Saquon Barkley of the Philadelphia Eagles. Barkley signed a two-year, $41.2 million extension last March that included $36 million guaranteed and additional incentives.
Meanwhile, ESPN insider Dan Graziano projected a four-year, $80 million contract for Gibbs, with $30 million fully guaranteed at signing. That estimate aligns closely with other league expectations.
If Detroit moves forward with a deal in that range, Montgomery’s roster spot could quickly become uncertain. His cap hits — $8.37 million in 2026 and $10.245 million in 2027 — would be difficult to justify alongside a record-breaking contract for another running back. Allocating that much money to two players at the same position would significantly limit financial flexibility elsewhere on the roster.
Interestingly, Gibbs recently expressed public support for keeping Montgomery in Detroit. Speaking to Detroit Free Press reporter David Birkett, Gibbs said he hopes the veteran returns, adding that the decision ultimately rests with Montgomery.
However, the situation is more complicated than that. While Montgomery could explore restructuring his contract, the Lions would still need to determine whether his role and production justify a revised deal — especially with Gibbs emerging as the clear focal point of the backfield.
Whether intentional or not, Gibbs’ comments highlight the delicate balance at play. His impending extension could directly influence Montgomery’s future, making the coming negotiations pivotal for both players.
One thing appears certain: Detroit is unlikely to part ways with Gibbs. That reality places added pressure on Montgomery’s contract talks and could determine whether his departure, if it happens, is smooth or contentious. As the offseason unfolds, the Lions’ handling of their running back situation will be one of the franchise’s most closely watched developments.
