The Detroit Lions enter the 2026 offseason looking to bounce back after a disappointing 2025 campaign. Just one year removed from securing the NFC’s No. 1 seed with a dominant 15-2 record, Detroit regressed to a 9-8 finish and missed the playoffs, ending up last in the competitive NFC North.
With the NFL Draft approaching, the Lions now have a major opportunity to retool their roster and quickly return to contender status.
Lions’ Draft Needs and Roster Outlook
After addressing key areas in free agency — including the center position — Detroit enters the draft with flexibility. However, offensive tackle remains a top priority, while edge rusher and secondary depth are also critical needs.
If the Lions can successfully fill these gaps, they could significantly improve both sides of the ball heading into the 2026 season.
NFL Insiders Believe Lions Can Contend Again
According to NFL Network analysts Daniel Jeremiah and Gregg Rosenthal, Detroit is one of the top teams capable of re-emerging as a contender with a strong draft class.
Jeremiah emphasized that the Lions’ roster is not far from elite:
“Detroit is an easy choice. Their to-do list isn’t that extensive. If they address a few key needs in the draft, they can be right back in the mix next season.”
Both insiders highlighted the team’s strong core, noting that many of Detroit’s top players are either still on rookie deals or early in their prime — giving the franchise a solid foundation for sustained success.
Key Advantage: Favorable 2026 Schedule
One underrated factor working in Detroit’s favor is their 2026 schedule.
Despite finishing with the same 9-8 record as the Minnesota Vikings, the Lions lost the tiebreaker and officially placed fourth in the division. While that impacted their draft position slightly — picking No. 17 overall — it also comes with a major benefit: a fourth-place schedule.
This means Detroit will face a slightly easier slate of opponents compared to division rivals, potentially giving them an edge in a highly competitive NFC North.
Can Lions Return to Playoff Form in 2026?
The path back to contention is clear for the Detroit Lions. If they capitalize on the NFL Draft and land immediate-impact rookies, Detroit could quickly re-establish itself as a playoff team — and possibly a division contender.
Now, the focus shifts to the front office to deliver on draft night and set the tone for a critical 2026 season.
