Detroit Lions Make Bold Move by Adding DE Derrick Moore to Strengthen Defensive Line

The Detroit Lions opened the second day of the 2026 NFL Draft looking to improve several areas on defense. After using their first-round pick to reinforce the offensive line, the organization shifted its attention to the defensive front with its next selection.

With the 44th overall pick, Detroit chose former Michigan defensive end Derrick Moore. To secure the pick, general manager Brad Holmes orchestrated a trade with the New York Jets, sending Detroit’s No. 50 selection in the second round and pick No. 128 in the fourth round in exchange for moving up six spots.

Prior to the selection, Sports Illustrated NFL insider Albert Breer noted that Detroit had been exploring the possibility of trading up. According to Breer, the Lions were particularly interested in taking advantage of several edge rushers who slipped past the first round.

Moore developed steadily during his time with the Michigan Wolverines. Early in his career, he played behind experienced pass rushers like Josaiah Stewart before eventually earning a starting role for the final two seasons of his college career. His performance continued to improve each year, culminating in a standout senior campaign where he recorded 10 sacks and 10.5 tackles for loss.

During the offseason, Detroit had already addressed several defensive needs. The front office added a safety, a slot cornerback, and two defensive ends through free agency. Still, the team continued to prioritize strengthening the defensive front in the draft.

NFL draft analyst Dane Brugler described Moore as a player who has gradually improved throughout his collegiate career. Brugler highlighted Moore’s physical traits, noting his ability to explode off the line of scrimmage and convert speed into power as a pass rusher. While Moore shows awareness when adjusting his moves during a rush, Brugler believes he still needs to refine his overall pass-rushing strategy and improve his flexibility when turning the edge. He also praised Moore’s willingness to set the edge against the run but suggested he could become more disruptive in run defense.

With Moore now in Detroit, he joins a defensive end group that already includes Aidan Hutchinson, Peyton Turner, D.J. Wonnum, and Ahmed Hassanein.

Although the Lions have added several defensive players this offseason, there are still positions the team could address later in the draft. Cornerback, linebacker, and defensive tackle remain areas where additional depth could be beneficial.

Unless another trade changes their plans, Detroit’s next opportunity to add talent will come in the fourth round with the 118th overall pick.
