The Detroit Lions addressed another roster need during this year’s draft by selecting edge rusher Derrick Moore with the 44th overall pick in the second round. Moore, who previously played for the Michigan Wolverines football, may have been considered a slight reach at that spot, but Detroit clearly believes in what the former Michigan standout can bring to its defensive front.

His arrival also provides star pass rusher Aidan Hutchinson with a potential long-term partner on the edge — something the Lions have been trying to solidify for several seasons. Moore still has areas to polish, particularly when defending the run, but his ability to pressure quarterbacks and his overall upside make him an intriguing addition.

Draft analyst Dane Brugler of The Athletic praised Moore’s overall profile, describing him as a selfless and versatile player who understands his responsibilities on the field and brings a reliable skill set. Brugler also noted that Moore’s development has steadily improved throughout his four-year college career.

Similarly, Matt Holder of Bleacher Report highlighted the defender’s progress. According to Holder, Moore expanded his pass-rushing arsenal during his final college season. The 6-foot-3, 260-pound defender initially relied heavily on speed-to-power moves, but he later added an effective inside counter and showed improved explosiveness, helping him produce a strong senior campaign.

There are several reasons for Detroit to feel confident about the selection. General manager Brad Holmes appears to have taken a more measured approach in this draft compared to previous years. Although the Lions traded up to secure Moore, the move was relatively minor, costing the team a fourth-round pick and their earlier second-round selection. That price seems reasonable for a player the organization clearly valued.

Strengthening the pass rush was a priority for Detroit following a disappointing season in that area and the departure of Za’Darius Smith in free agency. While the Lions also struggled at times against the run last season, the team may expect improvement with the return of Levi Onwuzurike and a healthy Alim McNeill along the defensive line.

Moore’s potential makes him an exciting addition, especially because of his connection to Michigan. After spending four seasons with the Wolverines, he already has a built-in following among local fans. Now, with Moore joining Hutchinson in Detroit, the Lions feature two edge rushers who came through the same college program.
