Detroit Lions Trade Up With New York Jets in Round 2 of the NFL Draft to Select Derrick Moore
Calvin Johnson ended up stepping onto the stage a little sooner than expected, showing off his signature gold shoes when it was time to announce a pick for the Detroit Lions.
Detroit moved up in the draft by making a deal with the New York Jets, climbing from No. 50 to No. 44. Because of the trade, Johnson had the opportunity to reveal the selection earlier than originally planned.
To complete the move, the Lions sent pick No. 128 to the Jets.
With the 44th pick, Detroit chose Derrick Moore, a pass rusher who played his college football at the University of Michigan.
Why Detroit moved up
The Lions targeted Moore as a player they did not want to risk losing later in the round.
For several seasons, there has been ongoing discussion about Detroit needing another strong edge rusher to complement Aidan Hutchinson. While Hutchinson has developed into one of the defense’s key players, many observers have felt the team still lacked consistent support on the opposite side of the pass rush.
Moore could help address that need. The former Wolverines defender is known for his length and disruptive play along the edge, traits that helped him produce solid results during his college career.
Although he was not widely projected as a first-round prospect, Moore has the potential to strengthen Detroit’s defensive front. Learning alongside Hutchinson could also accelerate his development, especially since both players share ties to Michigan’s football program.
Considering the modest price Detroit paid to move up, the decision could end up being a worthwhile one if Moore develops as hoped.
Is Derrick Moore related to Sherrone Moore?
Despite the shared surname and their connection to Michigan football, there is no evidence that Derrick Moore is related to Sherrone Moore, the former Wolverines head coach. The two simply happen to have the same last name.
