Lions encouraged to explore defensive line reunion during NFL free agency

The Detroit Lions are being encouraged to consider a defensive line reunion with veteran nose tackle Benito Jones during the 2026 NFL free agency period as they continue reshaping their interior defensive front.

Detroit believes it may have its long-term starting duo in place with Alim McNeill and 2025 first-round pick Tyleik Williams, while also developing rookie Skyler Gill-Howard as a potential rotational contributor. However, analysts suggest there is still room for an experienced depth piece like Jones.

Jones previously played for the Lions during the 2022 and 2023 seasons, starting 15 games in his final year with the team. He recorded 42 total tackles and 2.5 sacks across 34 appearances in Detroit before later spending two seasons with the Miami Dolphins.

According to Mike Payton of A to Z Sports, Jones remains a logical target for the Lions due to his familiarity with the system and affordable price tag. Payton noted that Jones would not be expected to start but could serve as a reliable rotational defensive tackle alongside younger players.

“Jones would be that rotational guy with rookie Skyler Gill-Howard,” Payton explained, highlighting his potential role in early-down run defense while allowing younger linemen to contribute in pass-rushing situations.

Despite the interest, advanced metrics paint a mixed picture of Jones’ performance. Pro Football Focus graded him at 45.9 in run defense last season, indicating below-average production, though his performance has slightly improved compared to earlier seasons.

Still, his experience and prior familiarity with Detroit’s system could make him an appealing depth option as the Lions transition toward a younger defensive line core.

The Lions have already moved on from veteran defensive tackle D.J. Reader and appear committed to developing their younger interior group. With McNeill and Williams projected as starters, Detroit’s depth options currently include Levi Onwuzurike, Mekhi Wingo, Jay Tufele, Chris Smith, and Myles Adams.

However, with uncertainty surrounding some depth pieces and injury history across the group, bringing back Benito Jones remains a realistic and low-cost option as the Lions evaluate their defensive line rotation heading into the 2026 season.
