Detroit Lions Facing Pressure to Extend Jahmyr Gibbs After $68M Running Back Contract Sets Market
The Detroit Lions may need to move quickly on a contract extension for star running back Jahmyr Gibbs as the market for elite running backs continues to rise across the NFL.
Through his first three seasons, Gibbs has developed into one of the most explosive offensive weapons in the league. The former Alabama Crimson Tide football standout delivered another outstanding performance in 2025, finishing the season with 1,223 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns while also contributing 77 receptions for 616 yards and five receiving touchdowns.
Those numbers have solidified Gibbs as one of the league’s top dual-threat running backs and positioned him for a massive contract extension in Detroit.
De’Von Achane Extension With Miami Dolphins Sets New Benchmark
A major development around the NFL may have just helped define Gibbs’ future contract value.
According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Miami Dolphins agreed to a four-year, $68 million extension with Pro Bowl running back De’Von Achane. The deal includes $32 million guaranteed and averages $17 million per season, making Achane the third-highest-paid running back in the NFL.
Only two running backs currently earn more annually:
Saquon Barkley — $20.6 million per year
Christian McCaffrey — $19 million per year
Achane’s contract now provides a clear financial reference point for what the Lions may have to offer Gibbs in a future extension.
Jahmyr Gibbs Could Reset the Running Back Market
Considering Gibbs’ production and importance to Detroit’s offense, it’s widely expected that his next deal will exceed Achane’s $17 million per year average.
The 24-year-old has proven to be one of the most dynamic backs in football thanks to his ability to impact games both on the ground and through the passing game. His versatility has become a key component of Detroit’s offensive scheme.
With veteran running back David Montgomery no longer part of the long-term equation, Gibbs could take on an even larger role in the Lions’ offense moving forward.
Lions Could Prioritize Extension Before 2026 Season
For Detroit, securing Gibbs with a long-term deal before the 2026 season could be a smart move. Waiting longer could drive the price even higher as the running back market continues to grow.
Achane’s new $68 million extension gives the Lions a clear starting point in negotiations, but Gibbs’ production and overall value to the offense could push his next contract even closer to the top of the running back salary rankings.
If negotiations move forward soon, the Lions may attempt to finalize a deal before the season begins to avoid further increases in the market price for elite running backs.
