Detroit Lions Linked to Former No. 1 Pick Jadeveon Clowney as Potential Edge-Rush Addition

There are only a handful of former No. 1 overall picks still active in the NFL, and veteran edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney is one of them. Currently a free agent, the three-time Pro Bowler could still provide value to a contender looking to strengthen its defensive front.

While Clowney may no longer be the dominant force many expected when he entered the league as the top overall selection in the NFL draft, he remains a capable defender. Known for his ability to impact both the run game and the pass rush, the veteran edge rusher is still expected to sign with a team before the upcoming season begins.

According to Matt Bowen of ESPN, the Detroit Lions could be an ideal landing spot for Clowney. In a recent analysis, Bowen listed Detroit as the best fit for the experienced pass rusher as the team continues searching for consistent help opposite star defender Aidan Hutchinson.

Detroit addressed the position in the draft by selecting edge rusher Derrick Moore in the second round, but adding a proven veteran like Clowney could further strengthen the rotation.

“Detroit drafted edge rusher Derrick Moore in the second round to play opposite Aidan Hutchinson on pass-rushing downs, but Clowney would provide more depth up front,” Bowen explained. “He had 8.5 sacks and 32 pressures last season in 13 games for the Dallas Cowboys, winning late in the down to get to the quarterback. Clowney would provide rotational value for coordinator Kelvin Sheppard’s unit.”

Clowney’s 2025 campaign with the Cowboys was especially promising. After several seasons where his pressure numbers were solid but sack totals remained low, the veteran defender finally converted more of those pressures into sacks, showing he still has the ability to finish plays.

Now 33 years old, Clowney may not add another Pro Bowl appearance to his résumé. However, his experience, versatility, and pass-rushing ability could still help the Detroit Lions strengthen their defensive line and compete for wins in the upcoming season.
