Detroit Lions Beat Writer Floats Bold 2026 Schedule Take as Team Eyes Rare Home Dominance
The NFL officially released its 2026 schedule on Thursday night, giving fans across the league the chance to start projecting wins, losses, and playoff scenarios. But while the full slate is now public, the Detroit Lions’ opponents have been known for some time—and many analysts already consider their schedule among the easier ones in the league.
That’s largely due to the NFL’s rotation system, which sends last-place teams into matchups against other divisional bottom finishers from the previous season. As a result, Detroit benefits from a softer draw in 2026 after finishing in a lower position within the NFC North.
Still, Detroit Lions beat reporter Mike Payton of A to Z Sports added a more ambitious layer to the conversation this week. He suggested that the Lions could realistically contend for something they haven’t accomplished in 35 years: an undefeated home record.
Detroit’s 2026 home schedule includes matchups against the Green Bay Packers, Chicago Bears, Minnesota Vikings, New York Giants, New York Jets, New Orleans Saints, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Tennessee Titans.
While predicting a perfect home season is always risky, Payton’s argument has some grounding. The Lions previously went undefeated on the road in 2024, marking a franchise first, and several core players from that roster are still in place. However, the team is not operating with the same level of dominance entering the 2026 campaign.
The proposed path is not without challenges. Detroit’s toughest home games appear to be against NFC North rivals Green Bay, Chicago, and Minnesota—all of whom could be playoff contenders. Those matchups will likely determine whether the undefeated home record is realistic or simply optimistic speculation.
On the other hand, the Lions also face several opponents that struggled in 2025, including teams from the NFC South and AFC squads that recently picked high in the draft, such as the Jets and Titans. That balance helps fuel the idea that a strong home record is at least within reach.
As always, NFL schedules released in May are only projections of difficulty. Injuries, midseason form, and roster changes can dramatically shift outcomes once the season begins. The Lions themselves have dealt with significant injury swings over the past two years, making consistency a key factor in any long-term prediction.
For now, the idea of an undefeated home season remains speculative—but it adds intrigue to a schedule that already looks favorable on paper for Detroit heading into 2026.
