Preview of Lions vs. Cardinals: Four Critical Matchups and Stats

For Jared Goff to regain his rhythm, a crucial factor will be maintaining clean pockets during plays. Recent analysis highlights that the Lions’ interior offensive line has been more vulnerable to pressure than in the past.

Last season, Graham Glasgow averaged 2.4 pressures allowed per game, but this year, that number has risen to 4.0.

Frank Ragnow’s performance has also declined, allowing 3.0 pressures per game compared to just 1.3 last year.

On a positive note, Kevin Zeitler has been consistent, permitting only 1.5 pressures per game, while Jonah Jackson increased his average from 1.9 last year.

The Cardinals’ defense has seen some changes, particularly with the loss of second-round pick B.J. Ojulari, who had a 9.6% pressure rate last season, due to a torn ACL sustained in training camp.

Another key player, Darius Robinson, a first-round pick in 2024, is currently on injured reserve with a calf injury.

Despite a relatively low blitz rate of 16.1%, ranking 26th in the league, the Cardinals still boast the fourth-highest sack rate at 11.3%.To mitigate this pressure, the Lions’ offensive line must focus on neutralizing Dennis “The Barbarian” Gardeck.

Gardeck has transformed his role over the past few years from a limited, situational pass rusher to a more significant contributor.

Last season, he led the Cardinals with 6.0 sacks and generated 43 quarterback pressures.

He’s continued this momentum into the current season, already notching 3.0 sacks against the Rams, earning a solid 79.3 PFF defensive grade that places him 16th among edge defenders.

On the opposite side, Zaven Collins, a former first-round linebacker turned edge rusher, has also been impactful.

He currently holds a 72.2 PFF defensive grade, ranking 25th among edge defenders, adding to the Cardinals’ pass-rushing strength.

Additionally, nose tackle Roy Lopez has impressed this season, ranking third on the team with three quarterback pressures and boasting a remarkable 90.2 PFF pass rush grade, the highest among interior defenders.

This matchup is vital for Goff, who faces skepticism regarding his performance.

Offensive coordinator Ben Johnson will need to design plays that create open passing lanes, while the offensive line must provide strong protection to help Goff find his rhythm again.

Successfully managing these elements will be crucial for the Lions as they strive to solidify their team identity.
