The Detroit Lions wasted no time strengthening their roster after the 2026 NFL Draft, making a significant financial commitment to land one of the more sought-after undrafted defensive linemen.
According to reporter Mike Klis, Detroit signed former Notre Dame Fighting Irish defensive tackle Aidan Keanaaina to a deal that includes a notable six-figure guarantee — a strong indication of the team’s belief in his upside.
Lions Sign Aidan Keanaaina With $300K Guaranteed Deal
Klis reported that Keanaaina secured a $300,000 guarantee from the Lions, a sizable investment for an undrafted free agent and a clear signal he will get every opportunity to compete for a roster spot.
Despite the financial backing, Benjamin Raven of MLive.com noted that Keanaaina still faces stiff competition along a revamped defensive front.
Detroit added more depth inside with sixth-round pick Skyler Gill-Howard, a high-motor interior defender praised for his leadership and disruptive style. The addition comes as Levi Onwuzurike is expected to spend more time lining up on the outside, creating a need for reinforcements on the interior.
Lions Reinforce Defensive Line in 2026 NFL Draft
The Lions made it a priority to rebuild their defensive front throughout the draft, selecting edge rusher Derrick Moore in the second round, Tyre West in the seventh round, and adding Gill-Howard in the sixth.
General manager Brad Holmes emphasized the importance of adding depth to support star pass rusher Aidan Hutchinson, who logged heavy snaps last season. The team is looking to build a more versatile rotation capable of generating pressure from multiple alignments.
Replacing Lost Production on Defense
Detroit faces a significant challenge after losing Al-Quadin Muhammad in free agency following a 10.5-sack season. His departure leaves a major gap opposite Hutchinson, making the Lions’ offseason additions even more critical.
Raven believes Moore could quickly carve out a role, potentially forming a strong pass-rushing tandem with Hutchinson while competing with veterans for playing time.
With a mix of draft picks and high-upside undrafted talent like Keanaaina, the Lions are clearly focused on rebuilding their defensive identity and improving a unit that struggled last season.
