The Detroit Lions have made it clear this offseason that protecting quarterback Jared Goff remains a top priority. But even after making several moves along the offensive line, some analysts believe Detroit may not be finished improving the unit.
With expectations rising for the Lions as NFC contenders, adding another experienced lineman could further solidify the protection in front of Goff.
Detroit Lions Reshaping the Offensive Line
The Lions significantly reshaped their offensive line during the offseason. The organization moved on from several veterans, added new talent, and used a first-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft on tackle Blake Miller.
One of the biggest projected changes involves star lineman Penei Sewell potentially shifting to left tackle. Meanwhile, Cade Mays is expected to step into the starting center role.
Detroit is also counting on the continued development of young guards Christian Mahogany and Tate Ratledge to stabilize the interior offensive line.
While the Lions still boast plenty of talent up front, the number of changes could create early-season growing pains. That is why some analysts believe another veteran addition could help steady the unit.
Joel Bitonio Linked as Potential Lions Target
According to CBS Sports analyst Zachary Pereles, the Lions could consider signing veteran guard Joel Bitonio to strengthen the interior offensive line.
Pereles noted that experience could be extremely valuable for a group undergoing several key transitions.
Adding Bitonio would provide Detroit with a proven presence at guard while the new-look offensive line continues to develop chemistry.
Bitonio Brings Elite Experience and Leadership
Bitonio has built one of the most impressive résumés among offensive linemen during his career with the Cleveland Browns.
Over 12 seasons, the veteran guard has earned five All-Pro selections, including first-team honors in 2021 and 2022. He also made seven consecutive Pro Bowl appearances from 2018 through 2024.
Although he did not earn a Pro Bowl selection last season, it was his first time missing the honor since 2017—highlighting the remarkable consistency he has maintained throughout his career.
For a team with championship aspirations, that type of leadership and reliability could be extremely valuable.
Would Signing Bitonio Make Sense for Detroit?
The Lions have already invested heavily in their offensive line, and the team clearly believes in its young talent. Bringing in a veteran like Bitonio could provide immediate stability, but it may also reduce opportunities for younger players expected to take on larger roles.
Still, the potential benefits are clear. Bitonio’s experience could help anchor the interior offensive line and support players adjusting to new positions and responsibilities.
Detroit Lions Remain in Win-Now Mode
The Detroit Lions are firmly in win-now mode as they push to compete for the top spot in the NFC.
With high expectations for the upcoming season, Detroit may continue exploring ways to strengthen its roster. If the organization believes adding Bitonio would improve protection for Jared Goff and stabilize the offensive line, the move could become a serious consideration.
For now, the Lions already boast one of the league’s most talented offensive fronts—but there is still a chance they could make one more move to make it even stronger.
