Detroit Lions Receive Encouraging News in Possible Chase for $87 Million Star

It remains uncertain whether the Detroit Lions are seriously involved in the race to acquire defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence. However, a recent development suggests that if Detroit is interested, circumstances could be moving in their favor.

On Tuesday evening, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported that contract negotiations between Lawrence and the New York Giants have stalled. According to Rapoport, the two sides have reached an impasse, which could lead to the team exploring trade options involving the standout defensive lineman in the coming days.

Rapoport shared on X that the Giants have already begun communicating with multiple teams about a potential deal and that discussions are expected to intensify before the upcoming draft.

Earlier this month, Adam Schefter of ESPN reported that Lawrence had formally asked the Giants to move him. The veteran defender is currently under a four-year contract worth $87.5 million but has spent two consecutive offseasons trying unsuccessfully to negotiate a new agreement.

Because the two sides appear unable to reach common ground, the possibility of a trade has become increasingly realistic. With the draft approaching quickly, many around the league believe a resolution could arrive soon. Lawrence himself seems open to a change of scenery after requesting to be dealt.

A potential deal may not be straightforward, though. Lawrence has been one of the league’s premier interior defensive linemen in recent years. He earned second-team All-Pro honors in both 2022 and 2023 and was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2024.

However, his production dipped during the 2025 season. Despite appearing in all 17 games, Lawrence finished with just half a sack, four tackles for loss, and eight quarterback hits — all of which marked career lows. Any franchise acquiring him would likely also need to negotiate a costly contract extension, and the veteran defender will turn 29 in November.

Even with the recent statistical decline, Lawrence is still considered a highly disruptive presence when performing at his peak. In 2024, for example, he recorded nine sacks, eight tackles for loss, and 16 quarterback hits, demonstrating his ability to impact games from the interior.

Why Detroit Could Be a Logical Landing Spot

Head coach Dan Campbell and the Lions have spent the offseason evaluating ways to strengthen their defensive front. Ideally, Detroit would like to add another edge rusher to pair with star pass-rusher Aidan Hutchinson, but reinforcing the interior defensive line is also a possibility.

The Lions allowed veteran defensive tackle D. J. Reader to depart in free agency, leaving a notable gap in the rotation. Aside from Hutchinson, Reader logged more defensive snaps than any other Detroit defender last season, making his absence significant.

Detroit will still have Alim McNeill and Tyleik Williams anchoring the interior, but replacing the 583 defensive snaps Reader handled in 2025 will not be easy with only internal options.

If the Lions were to pursue Lawrence, he could potentially step into Reader’s former role while providing an upgrade alongside McNeill in the middle of the defensive line.

For now, though, the idea of Lawrence landing in Detroit remains speculative. Rapoport did not reveal which teams have been negotiating with the Giants, so while the Lions could be involved, other franchises appear more likely candidates.

According to Grant Gordon of NFL.com, Lawrence is expected to attract plenty of interest. Gordon identified the Cincinnati Bengals, Chicago Bears, and Jacksonville Jaguars as potential frontrunners in the race to acquire the talented defensive lineman.
