Ex Detroit lions wife Kelly Stafford Sends Message to Rams Rookie Ty Simpson, Seen as Matthew Stafford’s Future Replacement
Even at 38 years old, Matthew Stafford continues to perform among the NFL’s elite quarterbacks. The veteran signal-caller added another milestone to his decorated career in February when he captured his first league MVP award.
Stafford narrowly beat Drake Maye of the New England Patriots after delivering a remarkable season that included a career-high 46 touchdown passes. The upcoming 2026 campaign will mark Stafford’s 18th year in the league, and the Los Angeles Rams appear to be preparing for the future.
During Thursday night’s first round of the NFL Draft, the Rams selected former Alabama Crimson Tide football quarterback Ty Simpson with the No. 13 overall pick. The move immediately sparked speculation that Simpson could eventually become Stafford’s successor in Los Angeles.
Following the selection, Simpson revealed that Stafford’s wife, Kelly Stafford, reached out to him with a welcoming message on social media.
“Kelly actually texted me on Instagram and welcomed me, telling me to reach out if we need anything,” Simpson said during his introductory press conference. “I can’t wait to talk with Matthew. I’m really excited because I just want to pick his brain.”
Simpson had an impressive 2025 season at Alabama, throwing for 3,567 yards and 28 touchdowns as the program’s full-time starting quarterback.
Despite the excitement surrounding the rookie, Rams head coach Sean McVay made it clear that Stafford remains firmly in control of the team’s offense.
“There were a lot of players we liked, but let’s make one thing clear — this is Matthew’s team,” McVay said Thursday. “This gives us an opportunity to address the backup quarterback position.”
According to NFL Network, Simpson’s parents previously met with Rams general manager Les Snead when Alabama visited the Los Angeles area for the Rose Bowl in January.
Simpson’s father, Jason Simpson, currently serves as the head football coach at UT Martin Skyhawks football.
While Stafford remains the Rams’ starting quarterback, the selection of Simpson suggests the franchise may already be planning for its next era under center.
