Las Vegas Raiders Antonio Pierce is the latest head coach to make controversial nepo baby hiring..

Now that Antonio Pierce is the official full-time head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders it sure didn’t take long for him to follow in the footsteps of great coaches like Bill Belichick and Mike Shanahan with a mildly controversial but common hiring to his staff.

Antonio Pierce was thrust into a difficult position this past season when he went from being the Raiders linebackers coach to the man handpicked to clean up Josh McDaniels’ mess as head coach. While the odds seemed stacked against him, the 45-year-old persevered and impressed.

The team finished 5-4 and scored some big wins late in the season against division rivals. The strong finish, along with the deep admiration the locker room and fanbase developed for him, helped Pierce go from interim to full-time head coach in January.

Now that he has full autonomy and is filling out his staff the way he wants, the Las Vegas head coach has already jumped head-first into a controversial staff-building tradition. On Wednesday, Las Vegas Review-Journal Raiders reporter Vincent Bonsignore reported that Pierce is hiring his son, DeAndre Pierce, as one of his new assistant offensive coaches.

“DeAndre Pierce comes to the Raiders from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, where he spent the 2023 season as a defensive coach. He played under his father in high school at Long Beach Poly and Arizona State when his father was the Sun Devils’ defensive coordinator from 2020 to 2022. He played defensive back at Arizona State,” Bonsignore wrote.

The younger Pierce will be going from undrafted football player to assistant coach for the Las Vegas Raiders in just two years. It really is nice to have people — and parents — in high positions. This adds to the long list of nepo babies in NFL history.

Nepo baby is slang for children who have benefited by landing important jobs and positions due to instances of nepotism in organizations or industries.

Head coaching legends Bill Belichick, Pete Carroll, and Mike Shanahan and among the 79 father-son coaching pairs in league history.
