Miami Marlins suspended Coach Skip Schumaker today

Marlins complete their 2024 coaching staff.

Miami The Marlins unveiled its 2024 coaching staff on Friday, after their statement on Tuesday regarding front-office hiring.

Miami, who had just experienced their first playoff appearance in a full season since 2003, retained a significant portion of their coaching staff under National League Manager of the Year Skip Schumaker, adding a few fresh faces to the mix.

The new hires include Bill Mueller as the assistant hitting coach, Jose Ceballos as the bullpen catcher, Griffin Benedict as the third-base instructor, and John Mabry as the hitting coach.

Mueller, the lone acquisition from outside the team, comes to Miami as a quality assurance coordinator after spending two years with the Nationals. Mueller has a wealth of firsthand information and expertise from his time as the 2003 American League hitting champion. He has also worked as a major league instructor with the Cardinals, Cubs, and Dodgers.

Having served as assistant hitting coach the previous season, Mabry is back for his second season with the Marlins. Along with hitting coach Brant Brown, he was instrumental in guiding Miami to both regular-season and post-season success.

After playing with the Miami Dolphins from 2007 to 2013, Ceballos spent nine seasons as a coach in the Marlins’ Minor League organization. It will be his debut season with the Major League team.

Benedict takes over third-base coaching duties from Jody Reed, who is remaining with the club as an infield coach. Reed suffered a right leg fracture last season when he was hit with a foul ball while coaching third base. Benedict spent the 2023 season as the quality assurance coach and has spent time with the Cubs’ and Padres’ organizations (two years with Chicago and 10 with San Diego).

Returning to the Marlins in their same roles to round out the coaching staff: Rod Barajas (field coordinator), Wellington Cepeda (bullpen coach), Rod Flippo (bullpen coordinator), Jason Hart (assistant hitting coach), Jon Jay (first-base coach), Reed (infield coach), Mel Stottlemyre Jr. (pitching coach) and Luis Urueta (bench coach).
