Lions Tailgate Suspended as Eastern Market Responds to Deadly Shooting”

Following a shooting that led to two deaths, Detroit’s Eastern Market has canceled its tailgate event set for Sept. 30, which was planned to align with the Lions’ final game before their bye week, a Monday Night Football match against the Seahawks.

Eastern Market announced the cancellation Tuesday via social media:

“In light of Sunday’s tragedy at Shed 6, we have consulted with stakeholders including public safety officials, city representatives, our small business community, staff, and neighbors.

Out of respect for the victims and their families, we are canceling the tailgate event on Monday, September 30th. We will collaborate with DPD to implement necessary safeguards.

Additionally, we aim to designate the Eastern Market campus as a ‘weapon free zone.’ After the September 30th pause, we plan to resume tailgating for the season with enhanced security protocols, which will be shared with the public in advance.”

The victims, both Detroit residents in their 20s and 40s, were shot near Wilkins Street and Riopelle Street around 4:30 p.m. after the Lions’ loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The man in his 40s was pronounced dead at the scene, while the younger man succumbed to his injuries on Monday.

“I don’t know all the details. I heard, and that’s tragic,” Lions head coach Dan Campbell told reporters Monday when asked about the incident. “Anytime someone loses their life, it’s tragic. That person has a family, and my thoughts are with them. Prayers go out to their family and friends. It’s unfortunate. But again, I don’t know all the details. As much as we can, let’s take care of each other.”

An Oak Park man in his 30s has been arrested in connection with the shooting, Detroit Police Chief James White said Sunday.

White shared that a large fight broke out inside Shed 6 at the market. After it dispersed, the shooter and the man who later died confronted each other with raised fists. The Oak Park man allegedly drew a gun and fired at least two shots, White reported.
