Inside the Lions’ locker room, officials explained their decision to negate the pick-six thrown by Jared Goff.

Lions quarterback Jared Goff attempted to get a play off before the 2-minute warning in the first half, with replays showing roughly 2:01 remaining.

He threw a pass directly to Cardinals linebacker Mack Wilson, who returned it for a touchdown. However, a whistle, which many players seemingly missed, led to confusion about the play.

Referee Brad Rogers explained, “One official was watching the clock and ruled the snap occurred at 2 minutes, which means the play is dead by rule. We started blowing whistles to stop the play. I know it started, but once we blow the whistle, it stops everything. Some players didn’t hear it, causing part of the play to continue while others stopped. But the whistles ended the play.”

Despite the controversy, the Lions capitalized by converting a third-and-12 after the 2-minute warning and scoring shortly after on a hook-and-ladder play. This extended their lead to 20-10, instead of facing a potential 14-13 deficit if the interception return had stood.

Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon said, “They made the call, and it impacted the game, but our guys stayed focused. They hit us with a well-designed play after, but we regrouped at halftime.” Gannon praised his team’s defense for a strong second-half showing.

Jared Goff credited the Lions’ defense, saying, “Our defense has been playing well for three games. They stepped up when needed, and we were able to close it out.” Cornerback Carlton Davis III also highlighted his key stop of Kyler Murray on fourth-and-short, saying discipline was crucial.

Kyler Murray remained optimistic despite the loss, saying, “I know what this team is capable of, and that’s exciting. We just didn’t make enough plays today, but we will.” Lions running back David Montgomery praised the offensive line, calling it the best in the league and a key to their strong rushing performance.

Wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown emphasized the team’s focus on putting pressure on the Cardinals early, which they were able to sustain throughout the game. Gannon acknowledged the impact of Lions edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson, who recorded a sack late in the game.

Goff echoed those sentiments, praising Hutchinson’s growth. Hutchinson himself called it the best defensive game he’s been a part of, attributing their success to executing the game plan effectively.
