New York Jets Struggle Against Broncos, Coach Saleh Faces Growing Pressure

The New York Jets are left searching for solutions after a disappointing performance against the Denver Broncos. Following the team’s loss, head coach Robert Saleh is addressing concerns surrounding quarterback Aaron Rodgers, especially after initially critiquing his cadence during the game.

Saleh’s Defense of Rodgers

In a press conference, Saleh clarified his previous comments regarding Rodgers, stating, “We’re always going to push the envelope with cadence. Always. But with regards to operation, getting in and out of the huddle, getting to the line of scrimmage, the communication that’s being had, those are all things that we can continue to look at and clean up.” He emphasized that cadence is an integral part of the team’s identity, asserting that the team will persist in refining this aspect.

Despite this defense, Saleh’s earlier remarks reflected frustration with Rodgers’ performance. He noted after the Broncos game, “We’ve got to figure it out, whether or not we’re good enough or ready to handle all the cadence. Cadence had not been an issue all camp. Felt like our operation had been operating pretty good. Obviously, today it took a major step back.”

The Jets struggled to find the end zone against the Broncos, failing to score a touchdown despite 13 possessions, and their performance was marred by penalties, leaving them with a 2-2 record for the season.

Pressure to Win

The Jets are under immense pressure to secure wins this season, especially given that veteran quarterback Rodgers is out for the entire 2023 season due to injury. The organization made a significant investment in bringing him to New York, hoping to bolster their chances at a postseason run.

Coach Saleh himself is feeling the heat as he seeks his first winning season at the helm. Fans have expressed frustration over the team’s frequent mistakes and penalties, particularly the struggles in protecting Rodgers, who faced a relentless Broncos defense. Saleh remarked, “To be honest, it’d make you sick if he was a 20-year-old quarterback,” underscoring the urgency of the situation.

The stakes are high for the Jets this year, so much so that general manager Joe Douglas, who played a critical role in securing Rodgers, has not received a contract extension and is in the final year of his deal.

Upcoming Challenge

Looking ahead, the Jets are set to face the Minnesota Vikings in a crucial game taking place in London. The team will need to rally and address their shortcomings if they hope to turn their season around and meet the expectations placed upon them.
