Former NFL star quarterback Tom Brady is just starting his broadcasting career, but he’s already making waves.
Over the weekend, Brady made a statement during the Detroit Lions vs. Green Bay Packers game that could have led to punishment from the NFL.
In the second quarter, Lions safety Brian Branch delivered a punishing hit to Packers wide receiver Bo Melton. Officials determined the hit was to the head and neck of a defenseless receiver, resulting in Branch’s ejection.
“I don’t love that call at all. I mean, obviously, it’s a penalty, but, to me, that has to be serious intent in a game like this,” Brady remarked about the play.
As a part owner of the Las Vegas Raiders, Brady is reportedly prohibited from publicly criticizing officials, which became an issue when his commentary touched on this during the broadcast.
Despite his comments openly criticizing the officiating, the league has decided not to fine him for his remarks.
“Tom Brady won’t face any punishment for his comments during Sunday’s Packers-Lions game,” reported Front Office Sports. Not only will Brady avoid punishment, but the league apparently had “no issue” with his remarks.
According to ESPN’s Seth Wickersham, Brady was “prohibited” from criticizing officials in his role as part owner of the Raiders.
“He would be prohibited from publicly criticizing game officials and other teams. While Brady could, in theory, disagree with a call on air, he could face fines or even a suspension if he went too far,” Wickersham wrote earlier.
Clearly, Brady’s comments didn’t go “too far.”
