With starting quarterback Dak Prescott out for the foreseeable future, the Cowboys are dealing with a challenging situation.
Prescott left the game during the team’s Week 9 loss to the Atlanta Falcons, and backup Cooper Rush finished the game at quarterback.
While Rush is expected to take over as the starter while Prescott recovers, former Cowboys scout Bryan Broaddus believes the team should consider playing Trey Lance instead.
Broaddus shared his thoughts in a November 3, 2024 interview with Bleacher Report’s Voch Lombardi.
He argued that the Cowboys may need to think beyond just filling in for Prescott and consider what Lance could bring to the offense, especially if the team is looking to change things up.
“I know some people might be saying, ‘Oh no, Bryan, you’re giving up,’ but I don’t see things getting better,” Broaddus said. “I really don’t.
I think maybe the offense could use a spark while Dak’s out, something different—perhaps some mobility, maybe even some read option plays. Something that forces the defense to prepare for us in a different way.”
Broaddus pointed out two main reasons why he thinks Dallas should give Lance a shot. First, he doesn’t see Rush providing much of a spark.
While Rush is a solid backup, the offense has already been struggling with Prescott at the helm, and Broaddus feels it may not improve much with Rush.
Second, the Cowboys traded a fourth-round pick to acquire Lance. The quarterback is currently in the final months of his four-year, $34.1 million rookie contract.
Given that Lance has more potential as an unknown asset, it could make sense for the Cowboys to see what they have in him, especially if they’re thinking about the long-term future.
Meanwhile, Rush, although dependable, is a known quantity, and will also be a free agent soon.
Prescott’s hamstring injury has turned out to be more serious than initially expected. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported on November 4 that the injury is worse than feared and that Prescott will miss multiple weeks.
There’s even talk of placing Prescott on Injured Reserve, which would keep him sidelined for at least four games. This could temporarily open up a roster spot for the team, but it also makes the decision at quarterback even more crucial.
As a result, the Cowboys’ next move at quarterback is vital.
Fort Worth Star-Telegram’s Nick Harris also reported that the situation around Prescott’s injury isn’t looking good, and the Cowboys are considering having either Rush or Lance lead the offense in Prescott’s absence.
The team may have to rely on one of these two quarterbacks for the next several weeks.
In short, with Prescott potentially out for an extended period, the Cowboys are now at a crossroads with their quarterback situation.
