Lions’ Derrick Barnes Calls for Ban on Controversial Block That Led to Season-Ending Injury
Detroit Lions linebacker Derrick Barnes speaks out on the controversial play that led to his serious knee injury, calling for a ban on low blocks.
Season-Ending Injury and Recovery Update
Derrick Barnes, the Detroit Lions’ standout linebacker, recently expressed his frustrations regarding the play that sidelined him for what is expected to be the remainder of the season. Barnes suffered a significant knee injury in Week 3 against the Arizona Cardinals. The injury, which tore the MCL and PCL in his right knee, has forced him into an extensive recovery process, although his ACL was left unharmed. This spared him an even longer recovery timeline. Reflecting on the situation, Barnes remarked, “Thank God I woke up, and he said he didn’t have to do anything with the ACL.”
Barnes returned to Allen Park this week, continuing his rehab under the watchful eyes of trainers, including those from his alma mater, Purdue. Reflecting on his progress, he shared his surprise at being able to engage in light activity. “I didn’t know I was going to be able to ride the bike today,” he said. “My leg’s been super stiff, and today is the first day I felt kind of normal.”
Call for Change: A Ban on Low Blocks
The play that left Barnes injured was a low cut block by Arizona Cardinals’ tight end, Tip Reiman. Low blocks like the one that caused Barnes’ injury are allowed within specific zones of the field. However, Barnes voiced his opinion on how damaging such blocks can be. “Me personally, I think that it should be banned,” he stated. “The offense gets a lot of leeway, more than the defense. It’s football. I’ve never been someone that complains about the hits…but it does happen.”
Currently, NFL rules prohibit blocks below the waist if they occur two yards outside the tackle box or more than five yards downfield. Despite Reiman’s block being within the legal area, Barnes feels the rule should be revised to prevent injuries like his. Many defensive players share Barnes’ perspective, arguing that these low blocks pose serious risks to their careers and safety.
Faith in the Future
Barnes, who is in the final year of his contract, had been on track for a promising season, with potential financial rewards awaiting him in free agency. Though the injury impacts his short-term future, Barnes maintains a positive outlook on his career. “I’m a God-fearing man and believe in the Lord and the things he’s got for me,” he said, expressing his faith in overcoming this setback.
As Barnes focuses on recovery, his remarks have sparked discussions on whether the NFL should reevaluate the rules surrounding low blocks. The outcome could shape the game’s safety standards, potentially preventing other players from facing similar fates.
