Seahawks’ Coby Bryant Risks Fine for Marshawn Lynch-Inspired TD Celebration
Seahawks cornerback takes a page out of Lynch’s book, but the gesture might cost him.
In a thrilling showdown with the Arizona Cardinals, Seahawks cornerback Coby Bryant made his mark with a pivotal play. Early in the third quarter, Bryant intercepted a Kyler Murray pass and dashed 69 yards into the end zone for a game-changing touchdown. But it was his post-touchdown celebration that quickly grabbed attention — and could land him in hot water with the NFL.
The Celebratory Gesture
Bryant’s touchdown was memorable for more than just the impressive return; it was his celebration that echoed a gesture made iconic by Marshawn Lynch during the Seahawks’ dominant Legion of Boom days. As he dove into the end zone, Bryant performed the infamous “grab beneath the line of scrimmage,” a move that Lynch first used during his historic “Beast Quake” touchdown in 2011.
Lynch’s version of the celebration quickly became one of the most memorable moments in Seahawks history. However, it also became known for something else: fines from the NFL for unsportsmanlike conduct.
A Fine Line for Bryant
Bryant’s choice to replicate the gesture could result in serious consequences. Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams was recently fined a hefty $19,697 for performing the same celebration in a game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. This fine sets a precedent, and now Bryant finds himself in a similar situation.
Lynch, whose celebratory gesture made him a fan favorite, was no stranger to penalties for his antics. In fact, Lynch was fined multiple times for his infamous move. The first came after his “Beast Quake” touchdown, and he was fined again in 2014 following another touchdown against the Cardinals. The NFL also handed Lynch an $11,050 fine after his second grab during a game. Furthermore, the league imposed a $20,000 penalty for his celebration during the 2015 NFC Championship game, warning the Seahawks that any future celebrations of that kind would result in a 15-yard penalty.
Bryant’s celebration puts him at risk of facing similar fines or penalties.
A Risky Tradition
While Bryant’s gesture may seem like a fun homage to Lynch, the NFL has been consistently vigilant about penalizing players for such celebrations. Aaron Jones, formerly with the Green Bay Packers, also found himself in the same situation in 2022, after performing the gesture following a 79-yard run. He was penalized $11,050 for his actions.
Although Bryant is undoubtedly enjoying his moment in the spotlight, his actions could soon have financial consequences if the NFL decides to follow the precedent set in past cases. For now, however, the Seahawks are hoping Bryant’s electrifying play will be remembered for the right reasons — on the field.
