The Ravens emerged victorious against the Los Angeles Chargers on Monday night, but their celebration was dampened by an injury to one of their key players. Tight end Charlie Kolar, who has been a vital part of Baltimore’s offense and special teams, suffered a broken arm during the game. Head Coach John Harbaugh confirmed the unfortunate news after the game.
Kolar’s injury occurred early in the fourth quarter, yet he displayed remarkable grit by finishing the game, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. This toughness exemplifies Kolar’s dedication, as he hasn’t missed a game all season and has been a consistent contributor. Known primarily for his blocking skills, Kolar has also made some memorable plays, including a 55-yard catch against the Bengals earlier this season.
Baltimore prides itself on having one of the NFL’s deepest tight end groups, featuring stars like Mark Andrews and Isaiah Likely, alongside Pro Bowl fullback Pat Ricard. However, Kolar’s role had been growing steadily over the past month. In Monday’s 30-23 victory, he played a season-high 49.2% of offensive snaps, underscoring his rising importance.
“Obviously, it impacts us because Charlie’s one of the brothers in the room,” said Likely.
“He’s having a great year. It’s really about giving a ‘next man up’ mentality to guys like Zaire Mitchell-Paden or Scotty Washington, who just came back. Everyone has to pick up the pieces.”
Kolar’s contributions go beyond blocking. This season, he set career highs with nine receptions, 131 receiving yards, and one touchdown. He’s also proven reliable for Lamar Jackson, catching 82% of his targets.
In response to the injury, the Ravens signed Scotty Washington to the practice squad. Washington, familiar with Baltimore’s system, spent part of the summer with the team before being waived in August. Now, he’ll have a chance to step up as the Ravens navigate Kolar’s absence.
