The Detroit Lions roster in 2024 is stacked, making them one of the most talented teams in the NFL, with Super Bowl odds as high as +270 on FanDuel.
However, one player who has been under scrutiny is slot cornerback Amik Robertson, and it seems he’s taking the criticism personally.
A social media post recently gained traction, claiming that Khalil Shakir would dominate Robertson in their upcoming matchup, and the poster even went as far as to say they’d be betting on Shakir’s stats to exceed expectations.
Robertson, not one to back down from a challenge, responded directly to the post, and his comment seemed aimed at both the individual making the claim and Shakir himself.
Though responding to someone with fewer than 9,000 followers might seem petty, this is the competitive spirit that makes Robertson a fan favorite in Detroit.
Despite his coverage struggles, his fearlessness in run defense has earned him respect.
At 5-foot-8, he’s managed to rank 21st in run defense among 204 cornerbacks according to PFF, which speaks to his tenacity and toughness despite being undersized.
While he might be vulnerable in the passing game, it’s dangerous to underestimate a player who excels in an area that most cornerbacks shy away from.
When it comes to coverage, Robertson’s stats aren’t as bad as they might seem.
PFF credits him with allowing a passer rating of 91.9 when targeted, which is slightly below the NFL average of 92.1. While this is worse compared to other Lions defensive backs, it’s not terrible by league standards.
On the other hand, Shakir has been outstanding this season.
As one of the NFL’s most productive slot receivers, he’s recorded 48 receptions and 521 yards from the slot, ranking second in the league.
Quarterback Josh Allen has a stellar passer rating of 119.2 when targeting Shakir in the slot, further solidifying his threat.
As for prop bets, there’s still no betting line for Shakir’s performance this week on major sportsbooks like FanDuel or DraftKings, likely due to the uncertainty around the return of players like Keon Coleman and Dalton Kincaid.
However, Lions fans will be pleased to see that their team is favored by 2.5 points in a high-scoring game with a 54.5-point over/under on FanDuel.
