Veteran Journalist Critiques Brock Purdy’s Potential Lucrative Contract Extension

The San Francisco 49ers are no longer in contention for a playoff spot this season, and the upcoming contract extension for Brock Purdy has sparked renewed debate. The 25-year-old quarterback is projected to earn between $50 and $60 million annually once his contract expires, but some question whether he’s worth that amount.

In Week 17, the 49ers, defending NFC champions, faced off against last year’s conference runners-up, the Detroit Lions. While this game was inconsequential for the 49ers, many expected a strong performance from Purdy due to the emotional stakes, as this game was considered a rematch of last year’s NFC Championship.

Purdy delivered an impressive performance with 377 yards and three touchdowns, but the two interceptions he threw, which were both picked off by the Lions’ Kerby Joseph, played a pivotal role in the 40-34 loss, sparking criticism of his late-game decision-making. One notable critic was former ESPN personality Jason Whitlock, who argued that the 49ers should reconsider offering Purdy a lucrative contract.

“The San Francisco 49ers would be absolutely insane to pay Brock Purdy $60 million a year. Hey man, Brock Purdy is a nice quarterback. He’s like Dak Prescott. He is not worth $60 million a year,” Whitlock stated on his YouTube channel.

Kyle Shanahan Supports Brock Purdy After Loss to Lions

Despite the 49ers’ loss to the Detroit Lions, which allowed the Lions to avenge their NFC Championship defeat, the outcome of the game was largely meaningless for the 49ers. However, social media erupted with commentary on Brock Purdy’s contract situation, leading to more scrutiny of his performance.

Following the game, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan defended his quarterback during the post-game press conference.

In the 2024-25 season, Purdy has thrown for 3,864 yards and 20 touchdowns, with 12 interceptions, which gives him a QB rating of 67.8. These statistics are fairly similar to his 2023-24 season, where he threw for 4,280 yards, 31 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions with one more week left to play. However, the team’s overall performance has been different, as the 49ers failed to secure a playoff spot.

As of now, the 49ers are unlikely to have Purdy play in Week 18, as they would prefer to let him focus on recovery before the meaningless matchup against the Arizona Cardinals.
