After the 2020 season, the Detroit Lions made a trade that changed their trajectory. Matthew Stafford, who had been their starting quarterback for over a decade, sought a chance to win elsewhere and was traded to the Los Angeles Rams.
The trade has benefited both sides as the Rams won the Super Bowl in Stafford’s first season, while Detroit has become a strong NFC contender with Jared Goff. However, Stafford’s future with the Rams may be uncertain, especially if his wife has any influence.
Kelly Stafford recently discussed her husband’s situation on “The Morning After” podcast. While she mentioned that she and Matthew enjoy living in Los Angeles, she also hinted at the possibility of a trade due to Stafford’s contract situation and the trade of Cooper Kupp.
“My husband wants to win. He’s not trying to hurt his team,” Kelly Stafford said. “The trade of Cooper is confusing because we were one play away from the NFC Championship, and I think we would have won if we made it.”
While Kelly enjoys L.A., she expressed openness to new experiences.
Stafford’s time in Los Angeles began with a championship but has been challenging in recent years. He only played nine games in 2022 due to a neck injury but has bounced back, throwing for 7,727 yards, 44 touchdowns, and 19 interceptions, leading the Rams to the playoffs twice.
Stafford’s return to the Rams this season almost didn’t happen due to contract negotiations. The Rams and Stafford agreed on a deal that paid him $46.1 million this season, but Stafford could push for over $50 million, as reported by SI’s Albert Breer.
“What if [Stafford] wants a market correction and says…seven or eight guys are making over $50 million? I want $50 million. There’s a lot to consider here, and if I’m another team, I’m calling.”
Kelly Stafford hinted she’d be willing to move from L.A.
“I have to take the lead here and ensure he gets the respect he deserves. Yes, I love L.A. But I also love adventure.”
If Stafford were traded, it would add a twist to the deal that sent him from Detroit and create another sense of déjà vu for Lions fans who’ve seen this situation before.
