Share PROVO, Utah – Former BYU basketball player Jake Shoff tragically passed away on February 6, 2025.

Shoff, who played for BYU from 2001 to 2004 after transferring from Weber State, died in a car crash on Thursday. He was 46 years old.

Jake Shoff dies at 46 The BYU basketball social media accounts posted, “Cougar Nation grieves the loss of basketball alum, Jake Shoff. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this time.”

Ben Criddle, Jake Shoff’s brother-in-law and former BYU football cornerback, wrote on X:

“On behalf of the Shoff and Criddle families, we announce the heartbreaking loss of a giant of a man—giant in every way. Our world is shattered. We are in shock and grief. No words can express the emptiness we all feel right now.”

Shoff was part of two BYU basketball teams that made it to the NCAA Tournament under former head coach Steve Cleveland.

A member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Shoff completed a two-year mission in Honduras.

Shoff was the CEO of The Phoenix Recovery Center, where he expressed that the treatment industry was his “life’s true passion.”

He is survived by his wife, Emily, and their four sons.

The Shoff and Criddle families shared on social media, “We know Jake would want us all to ‘Rise and Shout’ in life! Seize every moment! Impact the lives of those around you! Love your family and friends! Let’s all strive to be more like JaKe today and always.”
