Cowboys Take Key Step Toward Retaining Free Agent Odighizuwa
The Dallas Cowboys have officially started negotiations to keep defensive lineman Osa Odighizuwa on their roster as he approaches free agency.
Cowboys Transition to a New Era
Following the departure of Mike McCarthy in January, the Cowboys promoted Brian Schottenheimer from offensive coordinator to head coach. With limited financial flexibility—just $2.4 million in projected cap space—the team faces the challenge of assembling a competitive squad for the 2025 season.
Focus on Retaining Key Players
Due to salary cap constraints, Dallas is unlikely to pursue high-profile free agents. Instead, their priority is to re-sign key contributors, including Odighizuwa. According to David Moore of The Dallas Morning News, the Cowboys have begun discussions with the 26-year-old defensive tackle and also hope to retain cornerback Jourdan Lewis and running back Rico Dowdle.
Odighizuwa’s Impact on the Field
Odighizuwa delivered his best season yet, recording 47 combined tackles, 33 quarterback pressures, 23 quarterback hits, five tackles for loss, and 4.5 sacks. Over his four-year tenure with Dallas, he has accumulated 172 combined tackles, 58 quarterback hits, 13.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles.
Market Value and Contract Considerations
Given his age and production, Odighizuwa is a strong candidate for a lucrative multi-year contract elsewhere. Spotrac estimates his market value at approximately three years and $62 million. If the Cowboys want to retain him, they’ll need to restructure existing contracts or make roster cuts to free up cap space.
A Crucial Decision for Dallas
With their defensive line tested throughout last season, Odighizuwa proved to be a reliable presence. If the Cowboys aim to remain competitive in 2025, keeping him in Dallas should be a top priority.
