Eagles Set to Release Former Lions CB Darius Slay

The Philadelphia Eagles have made a decision regarding the future of veteran cornerback Darius Slay.

According to multiple reports, the defending Super Bowl champions plan to release the six-time Pro Bowler, bringing an end to his time in Philadelphia.

If the 34-year-old is designated for a post-June 1 release, the Eagles would save $4.3 million in cap space.

After winning Super Bowl LIX against the Kansas City Chiefs, the Eagles have some of their own defensive free agents seeking lucrative extensions.

Players like Josh Sweat, Zack Baun, and Milton Williams likely made it difficult for general manager Howie Roseman to keep the talented cornerback on the roster under his current deal.

On a recent appearance on the St. Brown Bros. podcast, Slay mentioned he would be open to a return to the Eagles or Detroit, the team where his career began.

While uncertain about his future in Philadelphia, the veteran expressed his desire to play one more NFL season.

“I’ve got one more left on my contract, but you know how that works,” Slay said. “Whatever they want to do, I might re-sign back, hopefully. If not, we’ll see what happens because I do want to play one more year, for sure.”

Detroit has questions in the secondary, as Carlton Davis is a free agent and behind him are inexperienced players. Terrion Arnold and Ennis Rakestraw will enter their second NFL season in 2025.

Though a reunion might be cheap, Detroit should focus on bringing Davis back and continuing to develop current players.

Slay admitted during the podcast that he had noticed a decline in speed at times.

While fans are nostalgic and a signing would carry minimal risk, the team’s best interest is to look elsewhere to improve the secondary.
