Pittsburgh Steelers WR DK Metcalf Won’t Face Charges After Incident With Detroit Lions Fan
DK Metcalf will not face criminal charges following an on-field incident with a Detroit Lions fan during a game last December.
The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office announced Friday that it will not pursue a criminal complaint against the Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver after reviewing evidence related to the confrontation with fan Ryan Kennedy.
Investigation Details
Authorities spent several months examining a warrant request tied to the incident. Investigators reviewed video footage from the game and interviewed Kennedy, stadium security personnel, and nearby fans who witnessed the exchange.
During the interaction, Kennedy reportedly leaned over the railing while wearing a blue wig, which slipped forward and briefly covered his face. The situation concluded when Metcalf reached toward Kennedy’s head with his right arm, though video appeared to show little to no physical contact.
Prosecutors ultimately declined the warrant request, stating that Kennedy “did not appear to be injured, nor did he seek medical attention at the game.”
NFL Suspension and Return
Although criminal charges will not be filed, the National Football League previously disciplined Metcalf for the incident. The league suspended him for the final two games of the regular season.
Metcalf later returned to play in Pittsburgh’s first-round playoff loss to the Houston Texans.
The star receiver had been traded to the Steelers from the Seattle Seahawks prior to the season.
Attorney Reacts to Decision
Mitch Schuster, Metcalf’s attorney, welcomed the prosecutor’s decision, calling it a “just result.”
Civil Lawsuit Still Pending
While criminal charges are off the table, the legal situation is not entirely resolved. Kennedy has filed a defamation lawsuit against Metcalf, which remains pending.
