Terrion Arnold Shares How Jared Goff Helped Him Get Better With the Detroit Lions

Detroit Lions cornerback Terrion Arnold recently shared how quarterback Jared Goff played an important role in helping him adjust during the early stages of his NFL career.

Speaking on the NFL Spotlight podcast, the former first-round pick explained how the intensity of training camp practices helped accelerate his development during his rookie season. According to Arnold, the competitive environment in Detroit made it clear how high the standard is among the league’s top players.

“Hard and intensity are two totally different things,” Arnold said. “You can go out and practice and make something hard, but maintaining that level of intensity for two hours and seeing the best players in the NFL doing it — that’s different.”

Arnold noted that several Lions veterans helped him adjust quickly to the professional level. Players such as offensive lineman Penei Sewell, wide receiver Jameson Williams, and especially Goff were key figures during his early transition into the league.

The rookie cornerback highlighted Goff’s willingness to explain what he was seeing on the field during practice.

“If they beat me on something, he’ll come back and tell me why he did it,” Arnold said. “Or what he’s reading or looking at. That meant everything to me. It helped me become a better player and move closer to the player I want to become.”

Arnold also spoke about the pressure that comes with playing cornerback in the NFL, a position where mistakes are often highly visible.

“One thing about corner, it’s the most analyzed and criticized position,” Arnold explained. “Your mistakes are in front of everybody, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Earlier in his rookie season, Arnold told reporters that Goff quickly became someone he felt comfortable learning from because of the veteran quarterback’s experience and leadership.

“A guy like that, with veteran experience and someone who knows how to win — you can ask him anything,” Arnold said. “I like to ask him what he sees when I’m in certain coverages or looks. If I know what he sees, it’s only going to make me better.”

Goff has also joked about Arnold during his early days with the team. In 2024, the quarterback teased the young defensive back for missing practice before later admitting the rookie had a legitimate injury.

“I was giving him a hard time about missing practice early on,” Goff said. “But he had a real injury. When he made that play later, I told him, ‘All right, you got me.’ He’s done a good job and he’s been fun to be around.”

Arnold’s comments highlight how mentorship from established veterans like Goff has helped the young cornerback continue developing into a key piece of the Lions’ defense.
