Caleb Williams was understandably upset after a controversial play during the third quarter of Thursday’s game.
The Chicago Bears quarterback was hit by Detroit Lions linebacker Jack Campbell while scrambling for a first down.
As Williams neared the sideline, Campbell made contact with him above the left knee, causing the quarterback to collapse awkwardly to the ground.
Here’s another angle of the hit.
Despite the awkward fall, Williams, who was evaluated in the medical tent, returned to the game without missing any snaps and went on to throw three touchdowns in the second half.
However, after Chicago’s 23-20 loss, Williams was asked about his knee and didn’t hold back his feelings about Campbell’s tackle.
“My knee’s fine,” Williams said, according to PFT. “That play was funky.
Let’s just put it that way. I didn’t really appreciate the play. He just kind of dove straight at my knee. So, I didn’t really get that.”
He continued, expressing frustration: “Definitely kind of frustrated about that one. Knee’s good, nothing wrong with it. I think I just got a bruise. But the play was funky.”
While Williams was clearly unhappy with the tackle, it was technically a legal hit. As an active runner, he did not slide or give himself up, so the hit was deemed within the rules.
However, the rookie quarterback’s lack of clock management ultimately cost the Bears the game, a mistake that overshadowed his performance in the second half.
Overall, Williams may not have liked the tackle, but it was deemed a clean hit by officials.
