Packers head coach Matt LaFleur was upset after his team’s loss to the Lions on Thursday night, but he was also frustrated by an incident before the game.
LaFleur was seen arguing with a fan in a Lions jersey who was involved in a pregame ceremony just before kickoff. After the game, LaFleur expressed his displeasure with the fan’s behavior, saying he thought it was wrong for someone to taunt his team so close to the Packers’ sideline before the game started.
“I’ve never experienced anything like that,” LaFleur said. “He was trash-talking our players, making the throat slash gesture, I was trying to calm it down, and then he came at me. I thought it was unsportsmanlike. I’ve been on a lot of fields, and usually, they manage that better. I thought it was a cocky fan trying to get involved, and I’d like to see security step in and remove him. That shouldn’t be happening.”
While LaFleur is right that fans shouldn’t be confronting players or coaches before the game, he should also avoid getting provoked by them. LaFleur walked toward the fan and exchanged words, when staying on the sideline might have been the better way to defuse the situation. Neither the Lions’ security nor LaFleur handled things particularly well.
