In one of the most thrilling games of the 2024 NFL season, the Detroit Lions made a bold decision in Week 14 against the Green Bay Packers with less than a minute remaining.
On 4th and 1, with 43 seconds on the clock, the Lions initially seemed poised to attempt a field goal. However, they chose to take a risk and run the ball to secure a first down instead.
Kicking the field goal would have been the safer option, but it would have given the Packers a chance to regain possession and potentially tie or win the game.
By converting the 4th down, the Lions were able to run the clock down further, ultimately setting up a game-winning field goal as time expired.
While Detroit’s head coach Dan Campbell earned praise for making such a bold call in a tense moment, NFL broadcaster and former Seattle Seahawks star Richard Sherman revealed on his podcast that Jared Goff played a key role in influencing Campbell’s decision.
Goff’s confidence and leadership swayed the coach’s thinking during this critical moment.
Now at 12-1, the Lions are in control of the NFC and have their sights set on a potential Super Bowl run.
Their next opponent is the Buffalo Bills, which could serve as a preview for the championship game.
The matchup is also significant for the MVP race, as both Goff and Bills quarterback Josh Allen are having exceptional seasons.
