Uncertainty grows over Chiefs rookie Josh Simmons as team owner stays silent on his absence
The mystery surrounding Kansas City Chiefs rookie Josh Simmons has deepened as team owner Clark Hunt joined coach Andy Reid in refusing to comment on his unexplained absence.
The offensive lineman’s disappearance remains puzzling more than a week after he missed the Chiefs’ win over the Detroit Lions in Week 6.
Simmons had been expected to play that day, but roughly five hours before kickoff, he was listed as “questionable” due to “personal” reasons. Three hours later, the Chiefs ruled him out entirely.
Following the team’s 30-17 victory over Detroit, Reid told reporters that the first-round pick was away “for personal reasons.”
Simmons also did not appear throughout the following week, missing Sunday’s dominant 31-0 win against the Las Vegas Raiders.
While at the NFL owners’ meetings in New York on Tuesday, Hunt was asked by ESPN’s Kalyn Kahler to clarify Simmons’ situation.
However, the billionaire declined to elaborate, responding only, “I really can’t comment.”
Reid again avoided addressing the rookie’s ongoing absence Monday morning, instead noting that general manager Brett Veach is “handling everything.”
The coach said, “As far as Josh goes, I don’t have any updates for you. (Brett) Veach is handling everything there, so we’ll just move forward with that, alright?”
Patrick Mahomes admitted last week that he was caught off guard by Simmons’ absence against the Lions.
“I didn’t fully know. We had walk-through around noon or 1 p.m., and he wasn’t there, so I knew something was up,” Mahomes said.
Reports suggest Mahomes inquired about Simmons, but coaches allegedly told him they “didn’t know” where the rookie was.
In the days since, no clear details have surfaced, with Mahomes, Reid, and the Chiefs all maintaining silence about his situation.
When asked if he had spoken with Simmons, Mahomes said, “I’ll keep conversations between us, but I’m always praying for all my teammates. I’ll keep everything else private to us.”
