Detroit Lions president and CEO Rod Wood recently revealed that he plans to retire, although he will remain in his position until the franchise appoints his successor.
Before joining the Lions, Wood spent about 30 years working in finance and wealth management. He also served for a decade as the head of Ford Estates, the office responsible for managing the Ford Motor Company family’s assets.
During the 2026 NFL Draft, the organization made sure to recognize Wood’s contributions with a memorable gesture.

On the third day of the draft, Lions head coach Dan Campbell and several staff members wore special T-shirts featuring a photo of Wood from his time playing basketball at Goodrich High School.
General manager Brad Holmes explained that the team wanted to mark Wood’s final draft with a lighthearted but meaningful tribute.
“Since this is Rod’s last draft with us, we wanted to make it memorable,” Holmes said. “We weren’t sure how he’d react to it, but using the old high school basketball picture felt like a fun idea. In the end, he took it really well.”
Holmes added that the tribute was meant to show appreciation for everything Wood has done for people within the organization.
“Rod has always gone out of his way to do thoughtful things for others — whether it was celebrating my jersey last year or honoring Dan’s jersey,” Holmes said. “It felt right for us to return the favor. Honestly, he deserves far more recognition for the impact he’s had on this franchise.”
Wood Explains Why the Time Felt Right
Speaking earlier at the NFL owners meetings, Wood discussed why he decided it was the right moment to step away from his role.
“I’ll turn 66 this summer,” Wood said. “There comes a point when it makes sense to move on and spend more time with family and friends. I also believe the organization is in a strong position. We have solid leadership in place and a very competitive team, so it feels like the right time to pass the baton.”
Retirement Announcement Came in February
Wood, who has spent more than a decade with the franchise, first shared news of his upcoming retirement in February.
“I’m grateful to the Ford family and Lions fans everywhere for trusting me to guide this team for the past 11 seasons,” Wood said in a statement. “Leading this organization has been incredibly rewarding, and I’m proud of what we’ve achieved together. Most importantly, I’m confident in the direction the franchise is headed under the leadership of Sheila Hamp, Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell.”
Lions principal owner and chair Sheila Hamp also expressed appreciation for Wood’s leadership.
“The Ford family thanks Rod for his dedication to both the Detroit Lions and the city of Detroit,” Hamp said. “He has been a trusted advisor and passionate leader, not only for our organization but also across the NFL. Rod has helped position this team for continued success, and while we’ll miss him, we’re excited to begin the search for the next leader of our business operations with the help of Russell Reynolds Associates.”
