The Detroit Lions wasted little time addressing two of the biggest weaknesses on their roster during the 2026 NFL Draft. In the opening round, Detroit selected Blake Miller from Clemson Tigers football to strengthen the offensive line and step in on the right side while allowing Penei Sewell to shift positions. Then on Day 2, the team finally invested an early pick in an edge defender again, selecting Derrick Moore from the Michigan Wolverines football—their first edge rusher taken within the first two rounds since 2022.

Moore’s selection officially ended that streak, but Detroit didn’t stop there. The Lions also continued hunting for value deeper in the draft. Players like Jimmy Rolder from Michigan and Keith Abney II from Arizona State Sun Devils football join Moore and Miller as rookies who could realistically push for places on the team’s 53-man roster.

Because of those additions, several current Lions players now face increased pressure heading into training camp.

Ennis Rakestraw Jr.

Ennis Rakestraw Jr., Detroit’s second-round pick in 2024, has not yet made the impact the team hoped for. Injuries limited his time on the field last season, and the arrival of Abney adds another competitor in the nickel corner role.

At the moment, Roger McCreary appears to have the inside track for the starting job. Meanwhile, Abney’s versatility suggests he could eventually play outside corner as well, even though his size may raise some questions. Rakestraw will now have to battle McCreary, Christian Izien, and Abney for snaps in the secondary.

Malcolm Rodriguez

Malcolm Rodriguez returns to Detroit after suffering a torn ACL in 2024, but he’s currently on a one-year contract, making the upcoming season crucial for him. Although Derrick Barnes struggled somewhat in 2025, he remains under contract through 2028, keeping his spot relatively secure.

The addition of Rolder introduces more competition at linebacker. Known for his tackling ability and effectiveness against the run, Rolder could eventually assume responsibilities similar to those handled by Alex Anzalone. That possibility should give Rodriguez extra motivation during training camp.

D.J. Wonnum

D. J. Wonnum joined Detroit during free agency and ended up being the only pass rusher the team added at the time, which drew some criticism. However, he logged a significant number of snaps with the Carolina Panthers last season, showing durability and the ability to handle a heavy workload.

Still, Moore’s arrival means added competition opposite star pass rusher Aidan Hutchinson. Wonnum could start the season taking the bulk of the rotational snaps behind Hutchinson while the coaching staff gradually integrates Moore into the lineup.

Larry Borom

The Lions signed Larry Borom in free agency as an initial answer after moving on from Taylor Decker. The Detroit native was expected to serve as a swing tackle and possibly handle duties on the right side while Sewell moved to the left.

However, the selection of Miller changes that outlook. As a first-round pick, Miller will likely be fast-tracked into a starting role if he adapts quickly to the professional level. Borom could still remain valuable as a depth option, particularly if Miller needs time to fully adjust to the NFL.
