Luke Altmyer Signs With the Detroit Lions After His Time at Illinois Fighting Illini football

Luke Altmyer has officially agreed to terms with the Detroit Lions as he looks to earn a place on the team’s roster.

The Starkville, Mississippi native will enter a quarterback room that currently includes Jared Goff and Teddy Bridgewater. Altmyer will likely aim to stand out during rookie minicamp and upcoming Organized Team Activities (OTAs) as he begins his professional journey.

Altmyer first began his college career with the Ole Miss Rebels football in Oxford. During his time there, he spent his freshman season serving as the backup to former NFL draft pick Matt Corral. Later, he lost a quarterback competition to Jaxson Dart—now with the New York Giants—which ultimately led him to transfer.

His move to the Illinois Fighting Illini football program marked a turning point. In Champaign, Altmyer developed into a key piece of the offense under head coach Bret Bielema.

Across three seasons as Illinois’ starting quarterback, he helped the team secure 23 victories while compiling 7,607 passing yards and 57 touchdown throws. He also contributed on the ground, rushing for 741 yards and adding 12 touchdowns.

Although he isn’t expected to step into a starting role immediately in Detroit, signing with the Lions represents an important step toward eventually seeing action in an NFL regular-season game. If he does get that opportunity, his precision as a passer along with his mobility and ability to extend plays with his legs could prove valuable.

With training camp approaching quickly, Altmyer will soon have the chance to begin proving himself at the next level.
