The Detroit Lions now know their opponent for Week 2 of the 2026 NFL season. Detroit will travel to face the Buffalo Bills on Thursday, September 17, 2026, in a primetime Thursday Night Football matchup.
The game will also mark a historic moment for Buffalo, as it will be the first official NFL game played at the franchise’s brand-new home, Highmark Stadium.
Bills Dominant in Recent Home Openers
Buffalo has been extremely strong in recent home openers. Over their last four season-opening home games, the Bills have gone undefeated while averaging an impressive 38.5 points per game.
Running back Ray Davis previously spoke about the emotional significance of the team’s final game in their previous stadium during the 2025 regular-season finale.
“It was special to see what it meant to some of the guys. There’s guys who’ve been there for a decade, and there’s guys who’ve been here for a year who put their blood, sweat and tears on that field,” Davis said. “Just seeing the guys embrace it and go out with a win and let the City of Buffalo feel special and know that this was a special one for them, it’s pretty cool.”
Lions Looking for Revenge After 2024 Shootout
The last meeting between the Lions and Bills came in December 2024 at Ford Field, when Buffalo defeated Detroit 48-42 in a high-scoring thriller.
That loss was one of only two suffered by Detroit during the regular season under head coach Dan Campbell.
Despite the defeat, the Lions finished the year with a dominant 15-2 record and secured the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs.
Lions Focused on a Strong Start in 2026
Entering the 2026 season, Detroit understands the importance of starting fast. The roster has undergone changes after several key free agents departed, while the front office added multiple new players during the offseason.
Last season, the Lions opened the year with a road loss to the Green Bay Packers but quickly bounced back the following week with a convincing victory over the Chicago Bears.
Early Test for Detroit’s Defense
With several new defensive players joining the roster, Detroit’s defense—led by coordinator Kelvin Sheppard—will face an early challenge against Buffalo’s explosive offense.
Meanwhile, Lions quarterback Jared Goff continues to emerge as a legitimate contender for the league’s MVP award each season.
New Era Begins in Buffalo
The Bills will enter the 2026 season under new leadership. The team parted ways with longtime head coach Sean McDermott following the 2025 season.
Former offensive coordinator Joe Brady has now taken over as head coach and will lead Buffalo into a new era starting with the franchise’s historic stadium opener against Detroit.
