General manager Brad Holmes stayed busy following the 2026 NFL Draft, making moves aimed at keeping the Detroit Lions competitive in the coming seasons.
During the first round, Holmes resisted several trade rumors and remained at the No. 17 overall pick, selecting offensive tackle Blake Miller out of Clemson Tigers football.
Holmes later made a trade with the New York Jets, sending the 50th and 128th picks in exchange for the 44th overall selection. With that pick, Detroit selected edge rusher Derrick Moore from the Michigan Wolverines football.
The Lions also added cornerback Keith Abney II in the fifth round (157th overall). Other draft selections included linebacker Jimmy Rolder in the fourth round, wide receiver Kendrick Law in the fifth round, and defensive lineman Tyre West in the seventh round.

Brad Holmes Explains Lions’ Urgency After Missing Playoffs
After the Detroit Lions missed the postseason for the first time since 2023, Brad Holmes admitted the experience created a stronger sense of urgency during the draft process.
“When you miss the playoffs, that might be the kick in the rear that you need at times,” Holmes said. “Not saying I don’t have fire in other drafts, but the urgency needed to be pushed up on everything.”
Holmes also revealed that the Lions made an unusual decision this offseason: the team did not hold a rookie minicamp, making them the only NFL team to skip the event this year.
Holmes explained that the move came after a thorough offseason evaluation with head coach Dan Campbell.
“We took a long, hard look at everything from top to bottom,” Holmes said. “We’re not doing things just because you feel like you have to. If we believe something new will help the football team, we’re willing to try it.”
