As the NFL offseason winds down, most blockbuster trades have already happened. But on April 16, a new storyline surfaced involving star defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence. Reports indicate that the standout lineman wants to leave the New York Giants. According to Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports, Lawrence’s request to be traded isn’t simply a negotiating tactic for a bigger contract—he genuinely wants a fresh start away from New York.
That situation naturally sparks speculation about potential suitors, including the Detroit Lions. While general manager Brad Holmes is not typically known for splashy trades or aggressive free-agency signings, it’s interesting to imagine what it might look like if Detroit decided to pursue the talented defensive lineman.
What Detroit Would Need to Do to Land Lawrence
If the Lions were serious about acquiring Lawrence, the biggest obstacle would be the financial commitment. Jones reported that the Giants are reluctant to offer Lawrence a contract at the top of the defensive tackle market following a statistically down year. However, that doesn’t mean they plan to move him cheaply.
Jones suggested that any serious trade proposal would likely need to include at least a first-round pick. In addition, whichever team acquires Lawrence would probably need to offer him a new contract worth somewhere in the high-$20-million range annually. For a team with playoff aspirations that needs help on the defensive interior, that type of investment could still make sense—especially in a year when elite defensive tackle prospects are scarce in the draft.
Lawrence has already earned roughly $72.7 million during his career, based on figures from Spotrac and Over the Cap. He is also currently playing under a four-year, $87.5 million extension with the Giants, meaning any acquiring team would be taking on a significant financial obligation. For Detroit, that price tag could be a major hurdle.
How Lawrence Could Impact the Lions’ Defense
From a talent standpoint, Lawrence would be a massive addition to Detroit’s defensive front. The Lions currently rely on Alim McNeill and Tyleik Williams at defensive tackle. McNeill has been working his way back from a torn ACL suffered last season, while Williams is still developing early in his professional career. Bringing in Lawrence could instantly elevate the entire defensive unit.
The veteran lineman has built an impressive résumé that includes three Pro Bowl selections and two Second-Team All-Pro honors. Over the course of his career, he has also recorded 30.5 sacks, demonstrating his ability to pressure quarterbacks from the interior.
Still, the financial commitment required to make a deal happen could ultimately prevent Detroit from making such a move. With several key players due for contract extensions in the coming years, the Lions may prefer a more cost-effective approach.
The Draft May Be the More Realistic Path
Instead of pursuing an expensive trade, Detroit could address the position through the NFL Draft. One prospect frequently connected to the team is Travis Burke from Memphis Tigers football.
Burke is considered a reliable prospect with strong drive-blocking ability for his frame. Scouting reports highlight his size and physical style, noting that he plays with aggression when finishing blocks. At the same time, analysts acknowledge that he has some areas that may require improvement. Even so, his length and competitive approach make him an intriguing option.
Whether through a bold trade, a free-agent signing, or a selection in the draft, Holmes and the Lions will need to address the defensive tackle position before the 2026 season begins.
