Funeral arrangements announced for 22-year-old road worker killed in the line of duty

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – Funeral arrangements have been made for the 22-year-old Kentucky Transportation Cabinet worker that was hit and killed while on the job Tuesday.

Blake Barnes of Elizabethtown died while working on a maintenance operation on Kentucky 210.

Kentucky State Police said a 74-year-old driver from Louisville was headed east on Old Elizabethtown Road when the road reduced to one lane. The driver didn’t see Barnes directing traffic and hit him. Barnes died before he could be taken to the hospital.

“Our hearts ache for the loss of a transportation team member today,” Secretary Jim Gray said. “We extend our sincere condolences to all those impacted by this tragedy.”

Barnes was also a firefighter with the Rolling Fork Fire Department. He leaves behind two children and a pregnant wife.

A visitation for Barnes will be Thursday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and 9 a.m. before funeral services on Friday. The funeral will be at Bennett Bertram Funeral Home in Hodgenville.

The driver who hit Barnes has not been charged.
