How the Seahawks’ Victory Over Cardinals Reshapes the NFC Playoff Picture
Seattle’s triumph over Arizona sparks hope and shifts postseason dynamics.
A Monumental Win for Seattle
Sunday’s 16-6 victory over the Arizona Cardinals wasn’t just another game—it was a turning point for the Seattle Seahawks and one of the most significant wins of Week 12 in the NFL. The triumph moved Seattle into first place in the NFC West and boosted their playoff odds dramatically.
According to Pro Football Focus, the Week 12 clash with Arizona presented Seattle with a 28% swing in playoff chances depending on the outcome—the sixth-highest playoff impact in the league for the week. Their win raised their odds to 36%, a notable improvement from the 8% they would have faced with a loss.
“That is a monumental shift,” noted Stacy Rost of Seattle Sports’ Bump and Stacy. “I cannot stress how big this win was.”
Gaining Ground in Tiebreakers
Seattle’s back-to-back victories over divisional rivals San Francisco and Arizona have significantly enhanced their tiebreaker prospects. The Seahawks now stand at 2-2 within the division and 3-4 in the NFC, tying Arizona for the best NFC record in the West.
“The Seahawks, with wins against San Francisco and the Cardinals in back-to-back weeks, gave themselves tiebreakers (and) also kept themselves from getting into insurmountable situations,” Rost emphasized. She further explained that losing both games would have eliminated divisional tiebreaker opportunities and placed Seattle in a precarious position for conference tiebreakers.
Rost concluded, “You could have won the remaining games, you could have won the rest of the season, and it wouldn’t have really mattered because you would have so much out of your control with tiebreakers.”
Shifts Across the Division
Seattle wasn’t the only team affected by Sunday’s results. Arizona and San Francisco suffered major setbacks in their playoff outlooks with losses. The Cardinals’ playoff odds plummeted from a potential 76% to 40%, while the 49ers saw their chances drop from 53% to a mere 15%.
Encouraging Signs in Team Depth
Former NFL wide receiver Michael Bumpus, now an analyst on the Seahawks Radio Network, praised Seattle’s recent form, especially the contributions from unsung heroes. “It’s just the way they did it,” he said. “So you took care of business with these two Ws, but then you looked dominant on the (defensive) line, your linebackers looked on point, and your (defensive backs) made some plays.”
Bumpus highlighted players like Coby Bryant and Josh Jobe, whose performances have transformed Seattle’s defense. “Not only are they winning these ball games, you’re getting contributions from guys that you weren’t getting at the beginning of the year, and they’re looking like main components of this team,” he added.
Depth has become a crucial asset for the Seahawks. Bumpus summarized, “The feel is completely different about this team. The worst thing that could happen is for you to go to New York and lose to these sorry Jets (this Sunday), but that’s not gonna happen. The boys gonna get it done.”
With playoff hopes alive and momentum building, the Seahawks are poised to continue their resurgence. Their recent wins demonstrate a team not only rising in the standings but finding a new identity and depth to fuel the push for postseason success.
